Duplicate Issues - Older Issue Always Closed?

I recently received an email notification that one of my defects was closed because it was a duplicate. I checked on the dates of the two defects, and my original defect was 3 months older than the duplicate.

[*]Why the heck was the older one closed rather than the newer one?
[*]Doesn't this distort the defect age and make it appear that defects are getting fixed faster than they really are?
