Invalid reference key

I'm having an issue creating a simple form in a suitelet. Everything is working fine except for storing selected items from a Custom List. I have the following HTML:

<select name="choice">  <option value="" SELECTED></option>  <option value="Option 1">Option 1</option>  <option value="Option 2">Option 2</option>  </select>

This is pretty much how I'm storing the choice (error-checking etc removed):
record.setFieldValue('choice', request.getParameter('choice'));

This has worked fine for text fields, but with this Custom List thing I'm getting the following error if an option is selected:
