calculated field dynamic mode and workflow

I have a before record submit action in a workflow that calls a script.  The script needs the value from a calculated field which seems to not get populated until after record submit.  Can you have a workflow run in dynamic mode?  The docs seem to indicate yes.  Can you set this or... does it try to figure out if it can use it or not?
