Using Credential Field to Connect to API

I have got a credential field in a suitelet to store a password to connect to an API. I need to encode “username : password” to base64 before a POST request is sent to the API, but if I try and encode it, it converts the password GUID (from the credentials field) instead of the actual password. Is there a way I can encode the username and the original password to base64 while getting the password from the credential field?
