UI Locking in Chrome when using basic updating of sublist

So my scenario is this; In a sales order edit screen, at the click of a button I want to open a dialog (using N/ui/dialog) and add some "please wait..." text. Then I loop through items and reset their ship vias (multi item shipping in a sales order). As the line items change, I would like to update the dialog window using jQuery with the progress. This works fine in Firefox but Chrome and Edge (I assume Safari as well), it wont update as the UI is frozen. Is there a trick around this or something I just have to
