Item Class not populating on item lines with SuiteScript 2.0 (but other fields source properly)

Our developer who is new to NetSuite is trying to create Sales Orders using a SS2.0 RESTlet, but item Classes are not getting set when doing so. Other fields seem to just get populated automatically when creating (example PO Vendor), so not sure why this one is not working.

If we manually add an item to the SO through the UI on that form, class appears as expected. Does he need to manually set this field when creating via SS? Thanks.
