Best way to handle Free Product?

We often give our customers an option for their discount

1) 15% Free Product
2) 10% off Total

I am wondering how others who give out free product (of course the % off varies and so does the % in free product) handle it on their invoices.  I'm just doing a custom price of 0.00 and making the note that it's free.  I have a feeling  there is a better way though.
