How do you disable system alerts?

I'm trying to load alot of leads into NetSuite and want to turn off/disable system email alerts to keep everyone from getting their inbox flooded with emails.  We have tried disabling from the administrator, but everyone continues to get emails.

Is there an issue with disabling system alerts from the preferences tab at the administrator level?  Or are we missing something?  I could only find out how to enable alerts in the documentation.
