Merge letters in bulk

Hi all,
I have a sale letter that i would like to send to all my wholesale customers. I am trying to do the bulk merge with Netsuite. So I added the merge fields to the letter but it did not work. Here is what I entered in the word document (that is used as a template):
NLFIRSTNAME NLLASTNAME
NLCOMPANYNAME
NLADDRESS1
NLCITY
NLSTATE  NLZIPCODE

Dear   NLFIRSTNAME,

Are you looking for......

I also tried:
<NLFIRSTNAME> <NLLASTNAME>
<NLCOMPANYNAME>
<NLADDRESS1>
<NLCITY>
<NLSTATE>  <NLZIPCODE>
