How to manage a non-inv item as inv?

Good Morning Everyone,

We are predominately a drop shipping company.  We do have a few products that we inventory.  My bosses would like to start having inventory for local customers on a handful or products (possibly more if successful).  Is there a way to have an item that is a non-inventory item for resale also as an inventory item?  Or do we have to have separate/duplicate part numbers for all the items we wish to inventory.  Thank you for your assistance and if you require more information please ask.
