Tracking Software Licences

We sell software and software use licenses.  While NS is fine to store the customer experience related to sales orders and support cases etc, I am not clear on how to leverage NS to keep track of software licenses. 

We need to track license, version of software, license dates, version upgrades (nothing purchased so not trackable using sales orders). 

How do other entities track this information who are selling licenses and/or software.  ??
