using generated numbers for customers record

Hello,

we hadn't use the generated id for the customers before, the id field filled by the name automatically, now we want to use the generated numbers, how can I enable this feature? and if I enabled it, will the id field for the old customers be filled also (override the existing id)?
Do you (if you are using generated numbers for customers) faced any problems with that?
