Does anyone have a method for managing serialized inventory W/O Advanced Ship Mod

We have advanced shipping for serialized inventory.   We are looking for ways to cut costs.   We basically sell specialized mini computers and the serialized inventory does come in handy for managing returns and repairs, but, we are looking to cut and expenses possible.

I figure we could just create a custom feild on sales order called serial numbers for tracking returns.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
