Using Maximum In Formula

Well here is what I am trying to do: from a transaction search I am calculating the total sales (Invoiced and Un Processed SO) and then subtract that from a sales rep's sales goals. So my search is grouped by rep and I can see the goals using a max function but I can not calculate anything using the goal number.... Any help would be great.
