What is a Primary Partner?

Could someone please explain what a "primary" partner is,  please?  I have Partners who are associated with certain customers.  What is different when I make the Partner a "primary" as opposed to when I don't have any "primary"?

Is there some info that a "primary" sees that a non-primary doesn't?

I searched the Help function, but it contained no information on what a Primary is, simply that there is one.
