Chart of Accounts Numbering Best Practice

We are ready to enter our chart of accounts and do not want to use NetSuite assigned numbering.    As users, we prefer to see the list of accounts in alphabetical order so we can sort by description as well as account numbers.

Does anyone have advice?  We are not sure if we should sort our list by CLASS and then assign account numbers to the detailed accounts or whether we should sort the list of account descriptions in alpha orders, assign numbers to that list and THEN connect the accounts into like groups by assigning them to CLASSES.

Please share your experience / regrets / advice.
