Sales Opportunity Reporting Best Practices

I am interested in hearing what others are doing with respect to reporting on sales opportunities.  We did not find the standard NS reports very helpful for our needs, and created some custom fields to accomodate such basis things as Status/Update, Resources Needed, Next Step, Next step Deadline & Date NS Last Updated. Anybody had simiar experiences? How did you address? ANy report templates available?
