Auto Numbering of Entities - Pros and Cons?

We are contemplating implementing auto numbers for our companies and contacts and after looking around the forums here I am not seeing any huge negative comments. Is there any gotchas we should look out for? I would like to hear from other users and how their implementations went. Are there any glaring issues? Any huge benefits that are not immediately obvious? Does it play well with the SWE bundle? What should we look out for, etc? Thanks.
