Backend Database Access?

Is there any easy way to access our databases?  We have a business need to modify fields and departments for all our historical data and transactions but an existing defect is preventing us from doing so via the available mass update or csv methods.  It would be really easy to what we need to do with SQL commands and access to the database - is there a way to get access?
