Search by Internal ID

I can't find any documentation on how to best search for an item, transaction, record, etc by the internal ID.  Global Search of "Internal ID: _____" doesn't work.  Seems like this should be REALLY simple to do...but I can't figure out how.  What is the best practice for searching Internal ID's?
