Formula with {parent.internalid} doesn't work for matrix children

Any Formula with {parent.internalid} doesn't pull the parent internal ID. This is a custom field and is used in matrix children to show their parent's internal ID.

Is there a workaround?

Trying to do this:

NVL2({parent},{parent.internalid},{internalid})

...so that in both children and the parent the custom field contains the parent's internal ID.
