Deactivate/archive contact details without loosing contact history.

I would like to be able to set contact details to inactive/deactivate so that I retain the account history but block all possibility of them being able to make future purchases or receive campaigns.

I have tried looking through the help documents but there doesn't appear to be any obvious references to archiving contact or customer details.
