Mass replace / delete member items in BOM

I have a situation here. It was decided to replace an item that is present in about 1,200 BOMs by a new one. This old one will still be used in another 1,000 or so BOMs (I can't inactivate it).

It is very easy to add a new member item to any size subset of BOM/Assy items using CSV import. However deleting the old member item from a subset of BOM/Assy items is a nightmare!!!!  How are you doing that????  I really need help on this from more experienced NS admins.
