Contracts module for a Software Reseller

I am in charge of implementing the contracts module for our firm through a consultant.  From what I am being told, it appears that there is a significant challenge in this environment, because at the time of Sales order, we do not know what contract number and dates for the contract that the vendor will assign.  This apparently, creates a cascading series of challenges to overcome.  Is anyone running this module in a computer software reseller environment?
