Should Invoices have same numbers as Sales Orders?

Moving to a scanning environment and will be grouping all related paper documents for scanning under the Invoice number. Would like to change our numbering system so that when we fulfill a Sales Order, the Invoice inherits the SO number. Partial Invoices will get a -1, -2, -3 etc. Does anyone have any experience - good or bad - with doing this?
