How do I strip HTML from a saved search?

I want to export Detailed Descriptions using a saved search but as these are Rich Text fields sometimes the fields are populated with HTML. Is there a way to get the REPLACE command to do something like

(REPLACE({custitemlsdd},'<*>','')


This does not work but if it did I could remove all the HTML.

Any ideas?
