Report Customization

For our sales we have not only territories, but Regions, each customer is assigned a region via a custom field. 

I've been trying for two days to customize the Sales by Customer Summary Report to show only a specific region and the report repeatedly times out -- with an error to shorten the date range (which is set to this month).

Is anyone else having difficulty with simple report customization?
