We have always used the Anonymous customer option when with V. 10 to allow customers to place an order without registering it.  I was happy to see the change in V.11 that simplified this and created a customer record for each customer even if not registered. 
However, we have run into a problem that seems to be related to this.  When a customer returns they are given a new record such as John Doe 2 and then John Doe 3. 
The number after the name appears to cause problems with duplicate detection.  If  the name is a criteria for dup. detection, it doesn't recognize these as duplicates.
