Matrix Mandatory Option Issue

I had a matrix option that was marked as mandatory. I created a matrix item and it included this option. I then unchecked the mandatory box since this option is not mandatory on all items.

Now when I try create a new matrix item it will not let me save without choosing the option that was previously marked as madatory.

Any ideas on how fix this?
