Formula fields on Transaction Forms (SO)

I needed to add a straightforward formula field on a Sales Order Column field mutliplying quantity by PO Rate.
I have raised with support who agree this is a bug with formula fields. I have been waiting 3 weeks for a reply to this with no action/update.

My client will not go live without this and so we have delivered a javascript solution.

However it doesn't answer the main question as to whether formula fields can work in transaction forms at column level.

Any ideas?
