Searching by Company Name versus Name/ID

I can't seem to search for Customers when I input the Company Name in any search (custom or standard).  We do NOT have Auto-Numbering turned on.  Instead, we use an internal accounting code for the Name/ID field and then we input the company name in the Company Name field.  Is there any way to globally custom searches by the Company Name field instead of the Name/ID field?
