Matrix Children NOT available?

I have something weird happening on my site - I think it has to be and NS upgrade or fix as no setting have been touched and everything was OK 2 days ago.

What I get is as follows:
A search on the site for an item used to bring up one instance of its occurrence - Red Socks showed up once.  Click on the link and you see the sizes.

Now I get the same - in the first line of the search.  However I ALSO seem to get as many further search returns as there are children in the matrix. Click on one of those and I get a message telling me the item is no longer available.
