Merging vendors

When we converted from Quickbooks, we had the same vendor listed multiple times with slightly different spellings or differentiators for the name.  I would like to "merge" those vendors together - is that possible?  (I know you can use the "inactive" button, but I would prefer to have the history as well as merge the open items).
