Importing lead errors

I need help. Have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to troubleshoot cryptic errors on lead importing using CSV.

I get this error on each one:
Could not locate Custom Field Key for Custom Field Name [ custentity_lead_prospect_type ] with Type [ ENTITY ] The field may not be defined.

Yet, the custentity_lead_prospect_type field DOES EXIST! We have successfully imported to this field in the past.

The field is a drop-down list so I have tried both the Value ID (an integer) and the text value (string) with no success. Both generate the same error.

We literally can not get important leads into the system because of this and it is creating quite a ripple effect through the sales and marketing department.
