List's From-To drop down shows T(1)...T(n) instead of item names ItemA...ItemZ

I'm having a problem with the From-To drop down when viewing lists.

1. Navigate to Lists > Accounting > Items
2. Select any Type from drop down (like "Non-inventory Item")
3. Select any ("Basic") view

The From-To drop down shows
T(1)
T(2)
...
T(49)

Instead of the alphabetized item names. Something like
ItemA1 - ItemA88
ItemA89 - ItemB12
...
ItemY23 - ItemZ99

This just started happening last week. It happens on IE6, IE7, and Firefox. It happens on different workstations at different locations. It does NOT happen for another user login using the same role.

I've tried clearing the browser cache but it doesn't help.
