Customers receiving automated "Backorder Notice" emails

Some of my customer are receiving "Backorder Notice" emails. These appear to be generated automatically by NS. Does anyone know how this could be happening? I've tried to fix this repeatedly. My email preference for Fulfilling sales orders is not marked.
