RSS/Atom support flawed?

My company is trying to display some information from our systems outside of netsuite on the netsuite dashboard using the RSS/Atom feed portlets but we are running into some problems.

One of our tech guys says he can't find a single standards compliant Atom feed that will display properly in netsuite's rss/atom portlet. One in particular is http://www.tbray.org./ongoing/ongoing.atom which is a feed from one of the creators of XML and Atom. He says he is has had better luck with RSS in the portlets, but that he still gets some errors where there are missing titles or the feed fails to load.
