Format of Item Option Date Field in Order Confirmation Email

The date format for an item option date field that displays in the order confirmation email is in the format of YYYY-MM-DD. We are needing to have this changed to reflect the format in which the date was entered by the customer DD/MM/YYYY. We have found no way within the system to alter the way an item option date field displays in an order confirmation email.
