Direct List Editing issue

I have a saved item search that I can not DLE on any of the columns.  I am creating my saved search by customizing my item list - adding a column and then saving it.  Before I customize the list, I can DLE most of the columns. After I customize the list, there is not even a reference to DLE on the top of the list on any of the columns.......... How do I make a saved item search Direct List Editable???  What am I doing wrong??
