Accounting for Broken Inventory

I'm sure there's a post on this topic but I can't find one so...

What's the best way to account for broken or lost inventory.  We have an item that is showing an inventory of one (which is broken) and I've taken it off our site manually, but want to know how to put this through NS so it is accounted for in reports, etc.
