Importing Orders- showing up with no sales order numbers

We just received our 2008 upgrade over the weekend and when I imported some orders in through XML the orders showed up but without sales order numbers. Has anyone else had this problem and if do you know what I can do to fix this? We are in the process of switching to CSV, but for the next fews days we were planning to continue with XML until our CSV importing is ready to go. Thanks
