simple formula?

i have created a custom field on sales orders for a total COD amount.  i simply need the order total plus a $9.00 COD fee.  But I keep getting an error

i have {total}+{9.00} in the formula field

the error is ERROR: Field Not Found

obviously total is not the correct field?  or what am i doing wrong?
