Default roles changed?

I have a customer reporting something very strange. Most of their employees have at least 2 roles. One is set to the default - so when they log in, they always log in straight away into their default role.

They are saying this morning everybody has been dropped into their non-default role and they had to switch manually.

Anyone know anything about that or having similar problems?
