A really unexpected UNEXPECTED_ERROR while sending e-mail using nlapiSendEmail

I wonder if it is a separate problem on our account. For over a week, we have been experiencing an unexpected error while sending emails to a dozen or so users. This is related to random (from our point of view) NetSuite users.
The email addresses are fine - the users have no problems with them. NetSuite Support had a look on their back-end and they got a 'Hard Bounce' error however we checked our spam gates and mail servers and there were no log entries for these users and bounces.netsuite.com domain at all. This includes "mail delivery attempts", they are also logged.
