Left Nav not displaying on drilldown

I am in the process of forwarding many of my URLs and I noticed a quirk with it... I'm forwarding to www.mysite.com/item_url (without adding the query strings) as I'm changing to single URL system.

The redirect forwards to the proper page, but now netsuite doesn't know which category the user is in... sometimes the user is shown the fully closed tab in the left navigation, sometimes it seems to take to you a certain category which contains the item, but sometimes it shows no left navigation at all.

It appears to show no left navigation when the items is in one or more "blank categories"... When you add an item to a category then delete or make the category inactive, the blank slot remains in the item record... deleting these empty (yet filled) category slots for a given item seems to prevent NS from showing the drilldown without a left nav portlet...
