Deleting custom fields = "System contention too high"

I was deleting some custom fields and received two error messages, one on which is very scary:

Duplicate custom field db info

OMG! - that can't be good...

Then this:

System contention too high to complete operation. Please try again during off-peak hours.


Did I mention it's 3:04am? I mean... how much MORE off-peak could I be??

This thread sounds like almost the exact same thing.  Anyone know about this?  I already opened a case, but I'm asking here in case this is SUPER serious then I can push hard to get it escalated.
