Mass Update by Formula - Not Working

We are trying to Mass Update records by formula and they are not working.

Specifically, we are trying to update the Sales Rep on Opportunity records and the Assigned To field on Tasks to both match the Sales Rep assigned to the Customer account.

The mass update always returns "0 out of xxx updated" -- the only way we can update these Opp or Task records is to do each one individually (not use the formula function) and manually enter the sales rep name.

It should be noted that the "preview" screen (prior to confirming the mass update) does show the correct value according to the formula for each record... in other words, the formula works properly but the records never get updated.
