Problem with Merge Fields on EMail Alert FROM field

When I set the "From" field for a Saved Search EMail Alert to the following, NO email is sent, and no error message is provided:

"{owner}" <{owner.email}>


When I leave the From field blank, the email alert is sent properly.

This is for a Custom Record. I need the EMail to be FROM the owner/creator of the specific custom record.

How can I achieve this?
