nlapiGetField.setMandatory hanging on 'custpage' set fields

Noticed today that my system hangs when trying to set a field required that was originally inserted using nlobjForm.

The method setMandatory works fine for built-in fields and custom fields but for any field inserted server-side using nlobjForm ('custpage' fields), it hangs when it is called...

Unfortunately there is no catching of errors or way to determine if it is working or not, other than to avoid passing these type of fields to the method...
