Urgent Issue with Custom Group Fields

We created several custom group fields for our upcoming web site. When creating a saved group search, those custom fields (which only apply to groups) don't show up in the list of group fields, but DO appear when you drill down into Group Member Fields (which are customer fields).
These are not customer fields, so something seems to be broken. When we run the search, none of the information that we've entered into the fields appear in the results.
The idea of groups is central to our new web site and we're pretty much stuck until this is resolved. Any other time of year, this wouldn't be critical but we literally have weeks to get this done before the holiday season starts.
